The Olympic WWII Bunkers

These woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

There will be adventure! After all of this confinement due to a unrelenting pandemic there must be adventure! This is the first of what will hopefully be many of Sam and I’s epic adventures and we plan on writing about all of them right here. Let me out line our first grand adventure. The Olympic WWII Bunkers.

But before we begin…

During World War II there was around a dozen military encampments built along the Strait of Juan De Fuca. Their purposes served everything from housing gigantic guns, to fire control. A lot of these structure still exist and are begging to be explored.

The cluster we are concentrating on is close to Port Angeles. This cluster features a few bunkers and batteries that are easier to get to but there one in particular that has been tough to nail down the location of. We’ve read a few vague blogs about accessing this one. Our most concrete information has come from combing old declassified WWII maps and some more current DNR (Depart of Natural Resources) maps to pin down a likely location and our best route there.

Declassified WWII 1944 Maps

Thus far the toughest part of this has been routing around private property and trying our hardest to find existing logging roads and undocumented trails to get us as close as possible. We maybe ready for adventure but neither of us are Indiana Jones. We face a few concerns, like which road are open and closed. How close can we get and how far will be have to walk. Nothing insurmountable, this will be a good first adventure.

Our journey starts next week.
